Professional Development & Training

Many large firms provide nuts-and-bolts training for their lawyers. The Paul, Weiss professional development program is distinctive because:

  • It introduces you quickly to the most intellectually challenging aspects of our practice: planning litigation tactics, structuring business entities, transactional practice and negotiating legal issues.
  • It emphasizes interactive programs that involve you in sophisticated analytical experiences.
  • It guides you through the assignments, issues and documents for which you will be responsible as a junior associate. (We provide 40 hours of training for corporate associates in their first year, 30 hours for new litigators, and a variety of programs and resources for new associates in other departments.)
  • It gives you a wealth of online resources - not just precedent databases - that you can use at your desk when you need them.
  • It helps you understand how clients think about their businesses by teaching you about the practical applications of financial analysis and corporate finance.

Summer associates attend several courses designed to help you understand the firm's practice areas and handle specific assignments. In addition, summer associates can participate in our regular associate training programs, on subjects ranging from white-collar crime to corporate deal structures.

We offer approximately six formal educational programs each month, in addition to many less formal departmental and practice group meetings that address substantive topics. Paul, Weiss is an accredited provider of CLE in New York State, and associates can usually meet all of their CLE requirements by attending our in-house programs. But we also encourage lawyers to attend useful programs outside the firm. For example, we pay an annual fee to The Practising Law Institute and the New York City Bar Center, enabling our lawyers to register for its programs without an additional charge. We also have a subscription for associates to pursue online programs at cognistar.com.
