A partner in the Litigation Department, Daniel J. Toal has extensive experience representing major corporate clients, such as Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, and ExxonMobil, in complex and high-profile litigation. Mr. Toal has litigated a wide variety of cases in legal disciplines including securities law, employment discrimination, environmental law, and international arbitration.
Among his recent significant matters, Mr. Toal:
- Served as trial counsel for Citigroup in its defeat of a multi-billion-dollar arbitration claim brought by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority related to its $7.5 billion investment in Citigroup in December 2007.
- Secured summary dismissal of a multi-hundred-million dollar breach of contract and tortious interference claim that Amaranth asserted against JPMorgan Chase.
- Secured summary dismissal of Commodities Exchange Act claim that traders of natural gas futures and options had asserted against JPMorgan Chase.
- Served as trial counsel for Citigroup and Salomon Smith Barney in its defeat of a $900 million fraud and breach of fiduciary duty claim.
- Secured dismissal of a $1 billion fraud and negligence claim asserted against Salomon Smith Barney by a former investment banking client.
- Successfully prosecuted an international arbitration on behalf of Soros Fund Management involving the breach of a joint venture agreement and obtained for the client a $47 million award.

The New York Law Journal’s Technology column on e-discovery.
During law school, Mr. Toal served as the administrative editor of the
Georgetown Law Journal and received a John M. Olin Fellowship in Law and Economics. He is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
