Description of Program and Relief
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)
TEFAP is a federally-funded food distribution program administered through the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (USDA/FNS). TEFAP helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans (including but not limited to elderly people) by providing them with emergency food and nutrition assistance at no cost, through food pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens.
CSFP works to improve the health of elderly people at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA Foods. It provides food and administration funds to States to supplement the diets of this group. CSFP food packages do not provide a complete diet but rather are a good source of nutrients typically lacking in the diets of the target population. Food packages include a variety of foods, such as nonfat dry and ultra-high-temperature fluid milk, juice, cereal, noodles, peanut butter, canned meat or poultry or fish, canned fruits, and vegetables.
While no specific guidance has been provided for those affected by COVID-19, individuals and families adversely impacted by COVID-19 should be eligible if they meet general eligibility requirements.
