Insurance
Paul, Weiss lawyers represent U.S. and global insurance and reinsurance companies on a broad spectrum of litigation matters. We have advised on and litigated disputes ranging from antitrust challenges to industry practices and state regulatory matters, and from high-stakes re-insurance arbitrations to disputes arising from mergers and acquisitions of insurance companies.
Our litigators have acquired deep experience in insurance and reinsurance litigation and arbitration, addressing issues of importance to the parties directly involved, as well as to the insurance industry as a whole. As a result, we have been chosen to represent a number of insurance industry groups and associations in litigation of industry-wide significance.
Paul, Weiss approaches its insurance practice from the perspective of a major New York-based international law firm with broad capabilities. As appropriate, our litigators work very closely with our corporate and tax partners, who are equally experienced in representing insurance industry clients.
Some of our recent work includes representation of:

- a major insurance company in a landmark New York Court of Appeals case establishing strict standards for punitive damage claims for bad faith claims settlements
- a leading insurer, Chubb, in the prosecution and defense of a number of claims relating to its insurance coverage
- a New York-based Bermudian reinsurer in two major arbitrations raising first-impression issues under finite-risk excess of loss retrocession agreements
- a major European reinsurer in connection with the receipt of a subpoena from the SEC and the New York attorney general relating to a formal investigation of industry practices involving loss mitigation products and
- the U.S. subsidiary of a global insurance company in an IRS audit, the resulting tax litigation, and related commercial litigation.
