Lawyers: Biography

Marc E. Perlmutter
Partner

Marc E. Perlmutter has been practicing law at Paul, Weiss for more than 30 years. A partner in the Corporate Department, Mr. Perlmutter was a partner in New York before relocating to the firm’s Hong Kong office in 1986 and then moving to Tokyo during the summer of 1987 to open the firm’s Tokyo office. He spent six years in Tokyo, where he was registered as a gaikokuho jimu bengoshi (foreign law consultant), before returning to New York in 1993. Since then, Mr. Perlmutter has returned to Asia on a regular basis each year in connection with his work for a number of clients in Japan, Korea and other countries in the region.

During his many years practicing corporate law in New York and Asia, Mr. Perlmutter has gained extensive experience in a broad range of transactional matters including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, license agreements and other complex commercial contracts. He also performs more general corporate advisory work and, with support from the firm’s Litigation Department when necessary, has represented his corporate clients in a variety of successful dispute resolution proceedings.

Representative matters that Mr. Perlmutter has handled include:

  • the representation of a group of Japan’s leading heavy industrial companies in their contract negotiations with Boeing for the design and production of the “777” and “787” aircraft;
  • negotiations and settlements involving the creation, extension and termination of various license agreements for power systems and other technology;
  • acquisitions, investments and other contract negotiations in Romania, the Czech Republic, the UK and elsewhere in Europe, as well as in the United States, for one of the fastest-growing heavy industrial companies in Korea;
  • the corporate restructuring of the U.S. operations of a leading Japanese-owned fashion retailer; and
  • the representation of Japan’s leading agricultural cooperative and three other Japanese companies in the first major joint venture between Japanese and Jordanian companies in the Middle East.

Although Mr. Perlmutter continues to devote much of his time to working with clients based in Asia, a significant portion of his practice has involved a variety of transactional and advisory matters in the United States and Europe for other domestic and international clients. He also manages the firm’s Visiting Lawyers Program for visiting lawyers from both companies and law firms around the world.
