- Recognized For His Extraordinary Service to the United States and Intelligence Community -

WASHINGTON D.C. – January 10, 2001 - The international law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison is pleased that its partner, Senator Warren B. Rudman, of the firm’s Corporate and International Law group, was honored with the Presidential Citizens Medal on January 8, 2001 at a White House ceremony and with the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal on January 9, 2001 by the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C.

"As a combat platoon leader in the Korean War, Warren Rudman never worried about the race or background of the men with whom he fought," said President Clinton. "As a United States Senator, he never let his party affiliation keep him from speaking his mind or building alliances to fight the great legislative battles. For his wise counsel, and his faithful service to our nation, I am grateful and proud to present Senator Warren Rudman with the Citizens Medal."

The Presidential Citizens Medal recognizes individuals who have performed exemplary deeds or services for his or her country or fellow citizens. Recipients of the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal are recognized for their distinguished service or achievement in a duty of a great responsibility within the Intelligence community that distinctly benefits the interests of the United States and constitutes a major contribution to the foreign intelligence mission of the Intelligence Community.

"It is with great pride that we recognize Senator Rudman’s distinct honors," said Alfred D. Youngwood, Chair of the firm. "His uncompromising devotion to his country, fellow citizens and intelligence community, as well as his experience serving as a United States senator, make him a superior candidate for both the Presidential Citizens Medal and National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal. We are proud to have Mr. Rudman as a member of our Paul, Weiss family and extend our sincere congratulations to him."

Before becoming partner at Paul, Weiss, Warren Rudman served two terms in the United States Senate representing New Hampshire. He served on the ethics committee from 1985 until he left the Senate in 1992. As its chairman and vice chairman, he presided over numerous investigations including the Keating Five and was active in fashioning ethics legislation. In addition, he served on the impeachment panel for Judge Claiborne and Judge Alycee Hastings.

In December 1986, Senator Rudman was appointed vice-chairman of the Senate Select Committee investigating arms transfers to Iran where he was instrumental in organizing and directing the investigation of the Iran-Contra affair. Senator Rudman served on the Senate Appropriations Committee, the Intelligence Committee, the Governmental Affairs Committee and the well-known Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Senator Rudman received his B.S. from Syracuse University in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army as a combat platoon leader and company commander during the Korean War. In 1960, he received his law degree from Boston College Law School.
