Description of Program and Relief

First Opportunity Fund Loans for Businesses

The purpose of the Topeka and Shawnee County First Opportunity Fund is to grow the community by helping local businesses create jobs and increase production. Services include (i) loans of up to $100,000; (ii) business consultation and counseling; (iii) mentoring, education, and training; (iv) access to networking opportunities; (v) credit score assessment and recommendations for improving score; and (vi) additional resources to help your business grow and thrive. Although there is no specific provision related to COVID-19, businesses may be eligible if they meet the eligibility requirements below.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions

To qualify for a loan, a business must be in Shawnee County and must meet at least one of the following criteria: (i) the business is owned by a low-income person; (ii) the business is located in an economically distressed area; or (iii) the business employs (or will employ) low-income individuals. Low income is defined as having an annual income, adjusted for family size, of less than 80% of the area’s median family income.
