We are fortunate to advise world-class, industry-leading companies, helping them tackle novel, complex issues and push the boundaries of technological progress. Our ability and confidence to go to trial is our core strength; our deep bench of experienced trial lawyers represents companies in their most significant matters, helping them protect their intellectual property and launch products. Our lawyers pair extensive experience in the courtroom and the boardroom with a thorough understanding of science and technology.

Our Practice

Paul, Weiss is not like other patent litigation firms. We specialize in matters of strategic importance to clients in a broad range of industries, and we concentrate on only those matters.

Our trial experience spans every forum:

  • We have tried a broad range of jury and bench trials in courts across the country.
  • We have tried arbitrations relating to patents around the world.
  • We have tried Section 337 patent infringement litigations before the U.S. International Trade Commission.
  • We have tried inter partes review (IPR) and covered business method (CBM) proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and helped persuade the PTAB not to institute such proceedings.

Ours is an appellate practice as well. We have defended our victories in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Supreme Court, and have been hired on appeal to defend or challenge verdicts from trials in which we did not participate.

Our team includes leading trial lawyers and Patent Office practitioners, adjunct professors of patent litigation, former patent examiners, former Federal Circuit law clerks, and lawyers with doctorates and other degrees in a broad range of scientific disciplines. Many of our lawyers claim two or more of these accolades.

Drawing from deep expertise in chemistry, immunology, molecular and cellular biology, physics, computer science, and biochemical, biomedical, biomolecular, civil, chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering, we have experience across a parallel range of products and technologies, including:

  • Biologics, including bespoke antibodies, vaccines, and recombinant analogues to human proteins used to treat autoimmune disorders, cancers, bleeding disorders, and other life-threatening diseases and conditions, as well as the methods by which these and other biologics are created, purified and manufactured;
  • Communications, electronics and computing products, including telecommunications software, internet method/information storage systems, computer network management software, LEDs, LDs, alkaline and hearing aid batteries, CDs and DVDs, audiotape cassette technology, word processing, barcode and machine vision technology, semiconductors, flat-panel display technology and fiber optics;
  • Consumer products, including shaving products, cosmetics, hair dryers, toothbrushes, aerosols and in-mold labeling tubes;
  • Industrial technologies, including chemical products and processes, mechanical sensors, automotive drive systems, fabrics, corrugated paper, machinery, paper stock washers, color correction equipment, electrical generators, spindle motors and rare-earth magnets;
  • Medical devices, including transcatheter heart valves, surgical staples, catheters, hip and knee prostheses, cryosurgical devices and medical diagnostic tests; and
  • Pharmaceuticals, including established innovative small-molecule drugs facing generic challenges and new drugs at the leading edge of development, from antipsychotics to dermatologic treatments to drugs for rare vision disorders and autoimmune diseases.
