Ted Wells Selected as a "Winning" Litigator for the Fourth Time by The National Law Journal

Litigation partner Theodore V. Wells was named as one of The National Law Journal's 2011 winning litigators. This is the fourth time that Ted has received this recognition, having been named a winning litigator in 1990, 1999 and 2009.

Ted was recognized for his victory for Citigroup Inc. in the Terra Firma trial, in which Terra Firma Capital Partners L.P. sought $8 billion in damages, arguing that Citigroup had duped the equity firm into overpaying for the music company EMI Group Ltd. in 2007.

Central to Ted's success was his cross-examination of Terra Firma Chairman and British financier Guy Hands, which lasted three days. Hands' position hinged on his claim that he had received false reports from a Citi lawyer that a rival had bid for EMI, forcing Terra Firma to boost its offer. Phone records did not support this claim and the lack of a paper trail further supported the defense's case.

Ted said, "There's no question this was one of the most important cross-examinations of my life."

This year the NLJ asked readers to nominate trial attorneys with at least one significant bench or jury trial verdict within the past 18 months and who had a record of success over many years. In addition, they looked for cases in which substantial damages were at stake, or in which the attorneys prevailed in a hostile jurisdiction.

Other Paul, Weiss lawyers who have received the "winning" recognition in the past include Ken Gallo (2007) and Marty Flumenbaum (2005).
