David Fein Publishes Op-Ed in Business Day on How to Financially Combat Illegal Wildlife Trade

March 17, 2022

Litigation special counsel David Fein, who serves as chair of the United for Wildlife Financial Taskforce, wrote an op-ed, “New Model to Combat Illegal Wildlife Trade is Vital in Southern Africa.” The article, published in Business Day on March 17, discusses the need for a coordinated response by NGOs and frontline organizations, the financial sector and relevant actors across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors in order to successfully disrupt the illegal rhino poaching trade and close the net on organized criminal underground networks.

With rhino poaching in South Africa rising for the first time in seven years, David discusses his efforts to grow a regional network of government agencies, financial institutions and transport companies across the Southern African region to combat the poachers that continue to drive the protected species to extinction.

Not only does illegal wildlife trade destabilize local communities, David says, but “it also fuels corruption on a global scale. Given that financial crime sits at the heart of the trade, any effective response must include the full power of global financial system.”
