Law Firm Leaders Send Letter to OMB in Support of Funding For Legal Aid Agency

March 13, 2017

As reported in The Wall Street Journal and The American Lawyer, Paul, Weiss is among six major law firms spearheading an initiative to prevent cuts to the Legal Services Corp. (LSC)’s budget that would affect LSC’s ability to provide free legal services to the poor.

The American Lawyer reported that firm chair Brad Karp sent emails to managing partners of about 100 firms on March 6, asking them to sign a letter to Mick Mulvaney, Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) expressing their concern about possible cuts. "The response was immediate and broad-based," Brad said. Several other firms also collected signatures.

Managing partners and chairs note that the pro bono work their lawyers do -- millions of hours annually -- depends on those independent legal aid groups funded by the LSC. The LSC-funded groups screen cases for merit and eligibility and train and mentor junior attorneys. "Our ability to provide pro bono legal services is directly dependent on partnership with legal aid organizations," the letter reads.

Ultimately, more than 150 of the nation’s largest law firms, representing all 50 states, signed on to the letter sent On March 9 to Mulvaney.
