NYAG Announces Application for Suspension 0f Debt Collection for Non-Medical and Non-Student Debt and Automatic Suspension of Medical and Student Debt Collection in Response to COVID-19

The New York Attorney General has announced an application process for persons or businesses that owe non-medical and non-student debts to the State of New York that have been referred to the Office of the Attorney General for collection and litigation. Any such person or business, or their dependents, that have been financially impacted by COVID-19, or the international, national, and state responses designed to prevent its spread, may complete and submit this application to be considered for certain forms of relief, including relief from collection activity, interest accrual, and the assessment of collection fees on nonmedical and non-student debts to the State of New York.

In addition, collection of medical or student debt owed to the State of New York that was specifically referred to the Office of the Attorney General for collection has been automatically suspended through June 16, 2020. At the end of this period of time, the Attorney General will reassess the needs of state residents for another possible 30-day extension.

Effective through June 16, 2020, unless continued for another 30 days, for the automatic suspension of medical and student debt.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions

All persons or businesses owing non-medical and non-student debts who are impacted by COVID-19 may apply, with determinations made at the sole discretion of Office of the Attorney General.
