Description of Program and Relief

Essential Service Designation Request

Businesses that are not covered by the guidance provided here may request a designation from Maine’s Department of Economic and Community Development as to whether they can be designated as an essential business and keep their physical locations and facilities open during the state-mandated closure to protect against COVID-19.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions

A listing of businesses that are considered essential and may remain open during the closure are here. They include, for example, healthcare services, grocery stores, gas stations, banks, laundromats, public transportation, utilities, and many others. Requests by businesses to be designated as an essential function should only be made if they are not covered by the guidance.
