Description of Program and Relief
Executive Order Regarding Evictions
On April 16, Governor Mills issued an executive order prohibiting landlords or their agents from attempting to evict tenants by a means not authorized by law. The order also prevents writs of possession from being used even if they have already been issued against tenants. The order also addresses tenants who are “at will,” and do not have a legal agreement with their landlord.
Landlords must now provide at least 60 days’ notice, instead of 30, to a tenant asking them to leave. If the landlord attempt to evict the tenant, the order extends the notice time from seven days to 30.
The order does not prevent evictions for law enforcement, public health or other lawful reasons, and the order does not relieve the tenant of their obligation to pay rent during this time.
