Temporary Suspension of Eviction Proceedings for Residential and Commercial Renters
Description of Program and Relief
On March 26, 2020, Austin City Council passed an ordinance providing renters that have failed to pay rent a 60-day grace period before facing eviction proceedings. Specifically, the ordinance requires landlords to provide delinquent renters with a notice of proposed eviction. Upon receipt of such a notice, renters will have 60 days to cure overdue rent, fees, and other charges. Landlords are prohibited from posting notices to vacate, locking out tenants, or removing tenants’ property during the 60-day grace period.
The ordinance does not relieve any renters of their obligations to make payments under their lease agreements.
