Paul, Weiss Transactions Recognized at ALB Japan Law Awards 2010

Transactions led by Paul, Weiss were recognized as the "Equity Market Deal of the Year," "M&A Deal of the Year" and "Japan Deal of the Year" at the ALB Japan Law Awards 2010 ceremony held on May 29.

The sale of Nikko Asset Management Co., Ltd. and NikkoCiti Trust and Banking Corp. by Citigroup was recognized as the "M&A Deal of the Year." Nikko Asset Management, which is one of Japan's most prominent asset management companies, was sold to The Sumitomo Trust and Banking Co., Ltd. in a transaction valued at $1.26 billion on October 1, 2009. On the same day, NikkoCiti Trust and Banking Corp. was also sold in a separate transaction to Nomura Trust and Banking Co. The team on the Nikko Asset Management transaction was led by corporate partners Toby Myerson, Steve Williams and Tong Yu together with corporate partners Paul Ginsberg, David Lakhdhir, Kaye Yoshino, counsel Ji Lu and Jennifer Spiegel, associates Ted Ackerman, Michael Elliott, Ricky Fong, Branch Furtado, Courtney Haraguchi, Colin Hsu, Cory Kampfer, Stacey McDonald, Makoto Nishigai, Akiko Okuma and Mie Ono, staff attorney Xu Yang, and paralegal Yoshiyuki Kawazu; tax partner Jeff Samuels and associate Mashiho Yuasa; intellectual property partner Chuck Googe and associate Zoe Hilden; employee benefits counsel Maureen Riley and associate Judy Hensley; and litigation partner Joyce Huang. The Nikko Citi Trust deal was handled by corporate partner Kaye Yoshino and associates Adriana Hristova, Colin Hsu, Mie Ono and Shima Osaka, and paralegal Yoshiyuki Kawazu; tax partner Jeff Samuels and associate Mashiho Yuasa; and intellectual property associate Zoe Hilden.

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group's (MUFG) approximately US$12.1 billion common stock offering, for which Paul, Weiss acted as issuer's international counsel, was awarded the "Equity Market Deal of the Year" and "Japan Deal of the Year." The offering by MUFG, which is the largest financial institution in Japan, is the largest follow-on offering by a Japanese issuer, and is the largest securities offering in Japan for the past decade. The joint global coordinators were Morgan Stanley, Mitsubishi UFJ Securities, Nomura Securities and J.P. Morgan. Paul, Weiss has served as U.S. securities counsel to MUFG and its predecessors since MUFG was first listed on the NYSE in 1989.
