In this edition of the Paul, Weiss Private Equity Digest, we review acquisition financing trends from 2015.

In market news:

  • January saw a decrease in dollar volume in sponsor-related M&A activity both in the United States (from $17.1 billion in December to $16.8 billion in January) and globally (from $47.7 billion in December to $33.7 billion in January), but an increase in the number of such deals (from 149 U.S. sponsor-related deals in December to 161 in January; and 338 global sponsor-related deals in December to 347 in January). 
  • With respect to U.S. sponsor-backed exits, both the total value and number of such transactions showed weakness in January (falling from $37.5 billion in December to $27.2 billion in January, and from, 100 exits in December to 62 exits in January).
  • In private equity fundraising news, following a significant increase in December to $34.9 billion - the highest dollar raise in 2015 - U.S. private equity fundraising cooled down significantly in January to $6.5 billion. The number of funds that closed stayed flat, with 18 funds closing in both December and January.
