Supreme Court & Appellate Litigation Chair Kannon Shanmugam ranked among the nation’s leading lawyers in securing Supreme Court cert petition grants.
In “Study Reveals the Elite Lawyers Dominating the Supreme Court Docket,” published on February 11, the National Law Journal reported on a new research paper that ranks the top the top 15 Supreme Court lawyers by volume of filings and cert petition success rates between 2000-2024. The authors of the paper, law professors from the University of Virginia, Vanderbilt University and the University of Toronto, found that Kannon has a cert petition grant rate of 28%—the third-highest grant rate in the group—and that he is the fifth-most prolific cert petition filer, with 93 petitions over the past 17 years. By comparison, the Supreme Court agrees to hear only about 1% of the thousands of appeals it receives each year, the article notes.
