Drawing on his experience before the U.S. Supreme Court and federal courts of appeals, Willy explains how appellate lawyers help clients navigate the procedural and doctrinal constraints that guide judicial decision-making.
“Being a good appellate lawyer means having a really good understanding of the technical architecture of the judiciary,” Willy says. “But if you can’t also write and communicate orally, effectively, what the case is actually about, the substance and why your client should win, then your understanding of all that technical stuff won’t really avail you much.”
