Supreme Court & Appellate Litigation Head Willy Jay discussed his transition to the firm, the evolution of appellate advocacy and the importance of developing the next generation of appellate lawyers in a wide-ranging interview with The National Law Journal. When preparing for oral argument, it is important to master both the details and big-picture themes, Willy notes. “You want to know the case inside and out—every facet, every page number—so that you can answer the justices’ questions about particular ins and outs,” he says. “But there’s also the ‘theme track.’ What is this case about? Why should we win?”
