Paul, Weiss Provides Counsel to Domestic Violence Victims in COVID-19 Pandemic

Paul, Weiss, in collaboration with Sanctuary for Families, is providing pro bono counsel to domestic violence victims seeking orders of protection from their abusers. The Paul, Weiss team recently assisted five domestic violence victims with obtaining orders of protection; one of these victims thanked the team for our “lifesaving work,” saying that she “would not have been able to feel safe” without our help.

Over the past few weeks, the Paul, Weiss team has assisted a total of 14 domestic violence victims with obtaining orders of protection and an additional domestic violence victim with preparing a family offense petition in the event she decides to seek an order of protection.

The firm is offering remote counsel through Sanctuary for Families’ recently-launched Virtual Courtroom Advocates Project (VCAP), a modification of the Courtroom Advocates Project (CAP). Because many victims have been forced to shelter in place with their abusers during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a heightened need to assist these victims.

The Paul, Weiss team includes litigation counsel Amy Barton, associates Meredith Arfa, Alison Benedon, Jeremy Benjamin and Jennifer Garrett, and pro bono counsel Emily Goldberg. Litigation partner Claudia Hammerman supervises the project.
