Patrick Cordova is a counsel in the Litigation Department and a member of the Complex Commercial Litigation practice group. He has substantial experience litigating complex civil cases in state and federal courts across the country, as well as in private tribunals. Patrick has represented clients in multi-jurisdictional tort actions brought against providers of consumer products and services, including under state consumer protection statutes; bet-the-company breach of contract disputes; and litigation in the Delaware Court of Chancery.
Patrick’s significant representations include:
- Chicago Parking Meters in obtaining a unanimous arbitration victory in a high-value dispute with the City of Chicago over its 75-year concession to operate the City’s metered parking system, specifically concerning claims that a material adverse effect on the concession’s fair market value had occurred when the City exercised its reserved powers to add and remove spaces from the system.
- ExxonMobil in defending tort lawsuits brought in state and federal courts across the country by dozens of U.S. states, counties, and municipalities, alleging various theories of liability, including under state consumer protection statutes, based on purported climate change injuries.
- Massage Envy Franchising, a nationwide franchisor of massage services, in defending tort lawsuits brought in Florida Circuit Court alleging vicarious liability, negligence, and violations of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.
- A global technology company in defending a tort lawsuit in the Northern District of California alleging negligence and misappropriation under California law based on purported cryptocurrency celeb-bait scams appearing on its services, and a tort lawsuit in the District of Delaware alleging similar claims under Arkansas law.
- Paine Schwartz Partners, a private equity firm, in defending non-party deposition and trial witnesses in insurance coverage litigation in New York Supreme Court and California Superior Court.
- The founders of a private equity firm in defending a derivative action in the Delaware Court of Chancery alleging breaches of fiduciary duty in connection with the firm’s conversion from a public partnership to a C-corporation pursuant to a tax receivable agreement.
- State-owned energy utilities in Latin America in international arbitrations concerning natural gas transportation and supply contracts.
Patrick is an active member of the legal community, including through his participation in the Federal Bar Council American Inn of Court and the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity. Patrick worked at the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund and Leadership Institute before law school.
