Karen Dunn and Jessica Phillips Featured in New HBO Documentary on Charlottesville Trial

September 29, 2023

A new HBO Original documentary film, No Accident, follows litigation partners Karen Dunn and Jessica Phillips through the highs and lows of the four-year litigation in Sines v. Kessler, in which they secured a landmark trial victory in 2021 on behalf of nine pro bono clients who were injured in the violence during the August 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Premiering on October 10, the film features Karen, Jessica and co-counsel from Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP going head-to-head with white supremacist leader Richard Spencer, white nationalist leader Matthew Heimbach and extremist podcast host Christopher Cantwell, among other defendants, during the chilling four-week trial; demonstrates how the trial team exposed a broad network of conspirators; and depicts the challenges of holding those leaders and organizations liable for their actions.

In addition to Karen and Jessica, the Paul, Weiss trial team included litigation partner Bill Isaacson, counsel Yotam Barkai and associate Arpine Lawyer.

No Accident, directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Kristi Jacobson, will air on HBO on October 10 at 9 p.m. ET, and will be available to stream on Max.
