Practices & Industries

Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP today announced a five-year partnership with Columbia Law School that names the firm the sole Lead Firm Partner of AI @ CLS, the school’s Generative Artificial Intelligence Initiative. The Initiative, which aims to shape the education of future lawyers and tackle emerging challenges stemming from the expansion of AI, will help prepare law students to lead in a rapidly evolving profession and catalyze research that is critical to understanding and managing responsible innovation in the legal field.

“Responsible use of AI has become a core part of how we deliver value to our clients on a day-to-day basis, and we believe it is essential for AI to be a major part of the education and training of law school students,” said Paul, Weiss Chairman Scott A. Barshay. “We are proud to partner with Columbia Law to help empower the next generation of lawyers to be in a position to use AI effectively, creatively and responsibly after they graduate.”

The partnership with Paul, Weiss will support Columbia Law School’s efforts to develop new curricular and co-curricular offerings, including an orientation module to establish a shared baseline of AI knowledge among students; bolster faculty research and expertise in AI, including the appointment of a new scholar-in-residence; and bring together scholars, practitioners, judges, policymakers and industry leaders to navigate novel legal and regulatory questions.

“AI presents an extraordinary opportunity to bridge Columbia Law School’s proud tradition of rigorous, theoretical education with the realities of modern legal practice to create an environment where students can explore these new tools while developing the judgment, critical thinking, and sense of responsibility to use them well,” said Daniel Abebe, Dean and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Law at Columbia Law School. “We are thrilled to have the support of Paul, Weiss for this Initiative and to have a partner that shares our commitment to rigorous legal training and innovation.”

The Initiative will also train students on how to use AI responsibly and effectively and advance cutting-edge research and scholarship in areas that remain underexplored despite their growing importance.

Paul, Weiss is committed to responsible innovation. The firm has integrated enterprise-grade generative AI tools that protect and maintain client confidentiality into all of its departments and practice groups. Additionally, AI training is a core component of the firm’s talent development programming for lawyers at all levels. Each group at the firm has developed its own approach to using AI that is tailored to its clients’ needs.
