Corporate partner Carmen Lu spoke with Financier Worldwide about the evolving shareholder activism landscape. In the article, “Shareholder Activism and Engagement,” published in the September issue, Carmen discusses how shareholder engagement has evolved into a year-round strategic discipline. “The result is a far more dynamic engagement landscape. Many well-advised companies are no longer simply communicating results – they are building trust and credibility with key shareholders long before a crisis or activist situation emerges,” she says.
Carmen also discusses the future of shareholder activism amid ongoing market volatility. Although an unstable market may create more potential targets, it can also be a “double-edged sword for activists,” Carmen says. “When performance is affected by broader market forces, it becomes harder for activists to lay blame squarely at the feet of management and the board. That, in turn, can make it more difficult to build investor support for change and pressure companies to take decisive action.”
