Secretary Jeh Johnson Addresses the Oxford Union

Secretary Johnson delivered a keynote speech to a capacity audience at the Oxford Union on March 8. In his speech, “Safeguarding Our Homeland and Protecting Our Values,” he discussed lessons learned as Secretary of Homeland Security about striking a balance between physical security and our values as a people. Among those challenges during his tenure: the threat of an ebola epidemic, a worldwide refugee crisis and extremism abroad and at home.

In concluding, Secretary Johnson enjoined the audience to follow the example of many great and transformational leaders who have defended those values in their speeches before the Oxford Union. “Nothing less than peace and freedom depends on it,” Jeh noted.

The Oxford Union is the world’s most prestigious platform for national and international debate, hosting high-profile speakers from around the globe. Past speakers have included U.S. Attorney General and Senator Robert Kennedy, Albert Einstein, Madeline Albright, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa.
