Kannon Shanmugam Featured in Original Jurisdiction for His 30th Supreme Court Argument

December 9, 2020

Litigation partner Kannon Shanmugam was featured in an article, “What's it Like to Argue Before the Supreme Court — for the 30th Time?” published on December 9 by David Lat’s Original Jurisdiction. The article celebrates Kannon’s 30th Supreme Court argument and discusses the advantages and challenges of the new procedure currently in place for oral argument due to the coronavirus pandemic. “The Court is handling this as well as humanly possible,” Kannon noted. “The clerk’s office is fantastic, giving the lawyers very specific instructions about the process. It’s very well organized, and it runs remarkably smoothly.”

Among other topics, Kannon discussed how Supreme Court oral argument has changed in the 16 years that he has appeared before the Court, and the unique value that Supreme Court and appellate practices provide to firms like Paul, Weiss. He also praised the resilience of firm leadership, and the firm as a whole, in the face of the unforeseen challenges presented by the pandemic. “I’m really proud of our office, both the lawyers and the operations team, for their incredible ability to keep our work going in this challenging time,” Kannon said. “It hasn’t been easy with all the personal challenges people have been facing, like caring for relatives with Covid or dealing with kids not being in school. It’s a testament to this firm and the community we’ve built here that we have been able to continue in the way that we have.”
