Paul, Weiss Launches Housing Advice Clinic With Legal Services of the Hudson Valley

Paul, Weiss recently partnered with Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (LSHV) to launch a new Housing Advice Clinic. On August 17 and 31, our attorneys provided pro bono legal advice to tenants who are representing themselves pro se in eviction proceedings pending in housing courts throughout the Hudson Valley.

With the housing protections instituted during the pandemic now largely lifted, eviction proceedings have resumed at a pace that has outstripped legal providers’ ability to represent the huge number of low-income tenants facing eviction. As a result, tenants at risk of losing their homes are forced to defend themselves in intricate legal proceedings against landlords who almost always are represented by experienced legal counsel.

With Paul, Weiss’s help, LSHV launched the Housing Advice Clinic to fill a critical need: providing as many low-income tenants as possible with the tools they need to represent themselves in eviction cases. Among other things, our attorneys are advising tenants on the timeline of an eviction case, notice requirements, the use of pro se Answer and Order to Show Cause forms to delay or stop impending evictions, as well as potential settlement options, and other strategic considerations.

The Paul, Weiss attorneys participating in this effort include, among others, corporate counsel Carrie Harrison, Jeremy Larkins and Melissa Mitchum; litigation counsel Peter Sandel; corporate associates Zain Haq and Jessi Kleinman; and litigation associate Bailey Williams.
