Krishna Veeraraghavan and Alvaro Membrillera Discuss Ukraine War’s Impact on M&A With Law360
June 27, 2022
Corporate partners Krishna Veeraraghavan and Alvaro Membrillera discuss the challenges to the M&A landscape in the U.K. and Europe brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and other macro-economic factors with Law360.
In “Russia’s War Is Complicating US M&A In The UK And Europe,” published on June 27, Krishna highlights the uncertainty caused by inflation, rising interest rates and supply chain pressure combined with companies’ need to be extra diligent amid the threat of U.S. and other governments’ sanctions on Russian individuals and organizations. “Uncertainty is the enemy of people trying to do deals,” Krishna says. “It has to get priced in in some way, and it makes it harder to reach an agreement.”
Alvaro notes that deal flow has slowed down largely due to inflation, interest rates and supply chain issues, but that the Ukraine war isn’t helping matters. “The war in Ukraine may have exacerbated some of those pre-existing trends, especially around energy and commodity prices,” he says. “However, the war in Ukraine as a standalone factor does not seem to be preventing M&A deal-making.”
