Katherine Forrest Discusses the Implications of AI for the Legal Profession in New York Law Journal Column

August 29, 2023

Litigation partner Katherine Forrest authored a “Technology Today” column in the New York Law Journal, “Cutting Through the Mess: What Does AI Really Mean for Lawyers?” In the article, published on August 29, Katherine examines the impact that AI will have on the legal profession, as well as the ethical and professional obligations lawyers should keep in mind regarding AI tools. She predicts that AI tools will precipitate several changes, such as to law firm hiring and training, or to the ability for groups who lack access to legal representation to be able to better represent themselves. She also notes that these tools are still in development and are not yet ready to be left alone to do the job of a lawyer.

“The legal profession is at the beginning of the most transformative moment in its history,” Katherine says. “We will not be practicing law in the same way in five years. Between now and then, it behooves us not to wish these changes away … but to find new ways to work with them and toward our new future.”
