Katherine Forrest Publishes Article on AI in American Judges Association’s Court Review

Litigation partner Katherine Forrest wrote an article, “Being ‘Human’ in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” published in Volume 59, Issue 1, of the American Judges Association’s Court Review. In the article, Katherine examines the various questions that the judiciary will need to answer when it is faced, in the not-so-distant future, with a sentient form of AI, and how the courts may address the legal status of such technology.

When artificial intelligence achieves sentience, Katherine writes, will we recognize it, in both the practical sense and the judicial sense of granting it “status”?

“Many readers undoubtedly deem these questions academic or philosophical,” she adds. “But these are not questions destined for another generation. Very likely, there is a judge sitting on the bench right now for whom these questions will be real, difficult, and resolving them, necessary.”
