Paul, Weiss obtained asylum for a client, a political activist from the Dominican Republic, who was harassed and stabbed repeatedly with a knife by activists from another political party. He reported the attack to the police, who did nothing to protect him. He then lived in hiding for four years before returning to his home where he was immediately threatened with a gun by the same activists. After his life was threatened, he fled the Dominican Republic, entered the United States through Mexico, and sought asylum in Texas. His case was later transferred to New York. The immigration judge granted his application from the bench at the hearing.
