Brad Karp and Jessica Carey Speak With New York Law Journal in “Litigation Department of the Year” Q&A

October 3, 2023

Firm Chairman Brad Karp and Litigation Department Co-Chair Jessica Carey were featured in an interview with New York Law Journal on October 3 as part of the publication’s annual Professional Excellence Awards. The awards recognize the most outstanding achievements by New York lawyers and law firms; Paul, Weiss was a “Litigation Department of the Year” finalist.

In the Q&A, Brad and Jessica highlight some of the department’s most satisfying successes of the past year, including securing a new trial and a rare plea agreement for a hedge fund founder in a securities fraud prosecution, overturning our client’s prison sentence and resulting in no prison time, no fine and no supervised release after our team uncovered evidence of prosecutorial misconduct; and winning the dismissal of a securities class action that averted significant reputational and financial risk against our client Nikola, a zero-emissions vehicle startup.

Brad explains why the department continues to be the go-to choice for the most urgent and threatening matters. “Time and again, we’ve proven that we know how to ramp up quickly and guide clients smoothly through a crisis,” he says. “That’s one reason we are often called in to replace previous counsel at a crucial moment, such as after an adverse decision, as trial is approaching, or when media, DOJ, congressional or regulatory attention poses significant reputational risk.”

The firm’s most important endeavor, Jessica notes, is ensuring that the next generation of litigators is ready to lead cases. “From recruiting the most talented associates from across the country and the world to providing them with meaningful on-their-feet experience and close mentorship, we work hard to ensure that future generations are equipped to first-chair trials and lead the high-stakes matters with the highest level of skill and judgment,” she says.
