Description of Program and Relief

Internet and Equipment Support for Distance Learning

The State of California and the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) are partnering with several private companies, business leaders, and philanthropists to bridge the digital divide and provide support for distance learning within the State during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among others, this partnership will prioritize providing Internet access, and laptops and tablets, for students in rural and low-income communities, communities with high percentages of residents with limited English proficiency, and communities with high percentages of residents with limited education attainment.

In addition, in order to meet the needs of students who do not have internet access at home, school districts can apply to receive 50% discounts on hotspot devices and on monthly recurring service charges from CUPC’s California Teleconnect Fund (CTF) until the earlier of either September 30, 2020 or when schools reopen. Rural, small, and medium-sized districts will be prioritized. Click here to apply for the discount and submit the completed application via email to CTFhelp@cpuc.ca.gov.
