Penalty Cancellation Requests for Late Payment of Property Taxes for Those Affected by the COVID-19 Crisis

San Diego County’s Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister announced that, although the deadline for paying property taxes is still April 10, 2020 under state law, taxpayers who are unable to pay on time due to the COVID-19 crisis can file a request to cancel late penalties. These requests will be reviewed on a caseby-case basis after April 10. Requesting a cancellation requires documentation demonstrating how the taxpayer was impacted by COVID-19 and how this interfered with their ability to make payment by April 10 (e.g., hospitalization). The availability of these request forms is not limited to COVID-19, but given the circumstances, the Treasurer-Tax Collector is reminding taxpayers of their availability.

If the request for penalty cancellation is approved, the taxpayer will receive confirmation of the cancellation of penalties in writing. The taxpayer will also receive written confirmation if the request is denied. Taxpayers should allow 4-6 weeks for their request to be processed, but this may take longer during peak collection periods.
