Temporary Family Assistance

Connecticut provides Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) to eligible families. Although no specific guidance has issued with respect to COVID-19, affected families may qualify if they meet eligibility requirements (below). The amount of cash benefit will depend on the applicant’s family size and region of the state in which the family resides.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions

Information on the program is available here. Generally, to be eligible, a family must have a dependent child (or pregnancy). The income limit for TFA applicants is known as the Standard of Need (SON). The SON and the amount of the cash benefit depend on the (1) applicant’s family size and (2) region of the state in which the family resides (see map and payment standard). The asset limit is $3,000. Unless exempt, adults receiving TFA benefits must participate in work activities. Federal law restricts eligibility for TANF-funded cash assistance to citizens and immigrants with legal status. Certain immigrants must reside legally in the country for five years before becoming eligible.
