Description of Program and Relief

Extension of April 2020 State and City Income Tax Filing Deadlines

Gov. Whitmer has signed an Executive Order that extends the deadlines for filing annual state and city income tax returns and paying state and city income taxes due on (i) April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020, for individuals, and (ii) April 30, 2020 to July 31, 2020, for businesses. Individuals who need additional time to file beyond the July 15, 2020 deadline can request an extension to October 15, 2020. Corporate taxpayers can request an extension to December 31, 2020 (for calendar-year corporate taxpayers) or February 28, 2021 (for fiscal-year corporate taxpayers).

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions

Taxpayers requesting additional time to file should estimate their tax liability and pay any taxes owed by July 15, 2020 (for individual taxpayers) or July 31, 2020 (for corporate taxpayers), to avoid additional interest and penalties.

Application Deadlines (If Applicable)

Extension requests for individuals must be submitted by July 15, 2020. Extension requests for corporate taxpayers must be submitted by July 31, 2020.
