Description of Program and Relief

Temporary Suspension of Motor Vehicle License Renewal Restrictions and Extension of Deadlines in Light of COVID-19

In light of COVID-19, the State of Montana and the Department of Justice, Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) have suspended certain restrictions on driver’s license renewals. The MVD may now renew a driver’s license online or by mail, so long as the license has not been expired for more than one year. Licenses renewed under this directive will be valid for no more than two years.

In addition, the deadlines for registration and title applications and paperwork transmittals for sales and transfers occurring after March 16, 2020 have been extended for a period of 90 days. The deadlines for new Montana residents to register and title vehicles, and to secure Montana licenses, have also been extended for a period of 90 days.
