Description of Program and Relief

SNAP Supplemental Food Assistance

New Jersey’s supplemental nutrition assistance program (NJ SNAP) provides food assistance to families with low incomes to help them buy groceries through a benefits card that is accepted in most food retail stores and some farmers markets. NJ SNAP recipients may also now use their benefit cards for online grocery shopping from Amazon, Walmart, ShopRite, and The Fresh Grocers.

Families of students who receive free or reduced lunch will also receive an additional benefit that will be automatically added to their existing benefit card or mailed on a new separate benefit card for families who are not currently enrolled in NJ SNAP.

The New Jersey Department of Human Services also has received federal approval to extend NJ SNAP recertification periods to six months for cases that are expiring in March, April, May, and June. This means families receiving SNAP will not have benefit interruptions during that time.
