Unemployment Insurance Benefits

Unemployed workers affected by COVID-19 may be eligible for benefits under already-existing Ohio unemployment insurance, which provides temporary income for workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own and who are either looking for new jobs or awaiting recall to employment. An executive order issued by Governor DeWine expanded flexibility for Ohioans to receive unemployment benefits during Ohio's emergency declaration period and those who miss work as a result of COVID-19 are eligible.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions

Eligibility requirements can be found at http://www.odjfs.state.oh.us/forms/num/JFS55213/pdf/. Basic eligibility requirements include being “totally” or “partially” unemployed, through no fault of one’s own; having worked enough weeks and earned enough money in “covered” employment during the “base period” of your claim; and if one had a prior benefit account, reestablishing oneself as a worker by performing enough work since the prior account began.

An executive order issued by Governor DeWine expanded flexibility for Ohioans to receive unemployment benefits during Ohio's emergency declaration period. Unemployment benefits will be available for eligible individuals who are requested by a medical professional, local health authority, or employer to be isolated or quarantined as a consequence of COVID-19, even if they are not actually diagnosed with COVID-19. In addition, the one-week waiting period for eligible Ohioans to receive unemployment benefits will be waived.
