Description of Program and Relief

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits low-income residents of Pennsylvania by providing them with financial assistance that they can use to buy food at grocery stores and supermarkets. SNAP is a federal program that is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, which determines whether a particular individual or household is eligible to receive benefits. These offerings were previously in place, and have not changed in response to COVID-19.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions

Standard eligibility rules apply. Under those rules, an individual is eligible to receive SNAP benefits only if his or her income falls below the limits set by the State. The limits that apply to a particular individual depend on household size, monthly income, and whether one or more members of the household has a disability or is age 60 or older. For more details regarding the current income limits, which remain in effect through September 30, 2020, please refer to this page.

Note that the income limits are adjusted annually. Additionally, adults between ages 18 and 49 and who do not have dependents must work or participate in a work program in order to receive SNAP benefits.
