Description of Program and Relief

Extension of State Tax Return Filing Deadline

INCOME TAX

The Rhode Island Division of Taxation has said it will mirror the Internal Revenue Service’s (“IRS”) federal extension. The IRS has extended the annual filing deadline and federal income tax payments from April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020. This deferment applies to all taxpayers, including individuals, trusts and estates, corporations and other non-corporate tax filers as well as those who pay self-employment taxes.

The Division of Taxation is currently awaiting the issuance of written guidance from the IRS and will post further guidance as soon as possible on its COVID-19 webpage.

SALES TAX

Sales taxes already collected are still due. Under Rhode Island’s Taxpayer Rights and Responsibilities regulation (Regulation 280-RICR-20-00-4), businesses and taxpayers can request that penalties be abated if there was no negligence or intentional disregard of the law.
