Wrongly Convicted Man Wins New Trial After More Than 20 Years in Prison

As reported in The New York Times and the New York Law Journal, Paul, Weiss helped obtain a new trial for a man who has been wrongly incarcerated for more than 20 years on a murder conviction. The Appellate Division, Second Department, granted the defendant's motion for a new trial because of newly discovered evidence. The defendant, who has maintained his innocence since his arrest, was sentenced to a 25 years to life sentence, and his motion for a new trial had been denied by a State Supreme Court judge. According to the Law Journal, the Exoneration Initiative became involved in the case in 2008 and filed the motion to set aside the conviction. Paul, Weiss handled the hearing and the appeal.

The Paul, Weiss team included litigation partner Roberto Finzi, who argued the appeal, and associates Andree Goldsmith, Jane B. O'Brien and Ilana D. Waxman.
