Kannon Shanmugam Discusses His Career as Supreme Court and Appellate Advocate on Attorney Lounge Podcast

Litigation partner Kannon Shanmugam was the featured guest on the January 18 episode of the Attorney Lounge podcast. The interview focused on Kannon’s career as an appellate advocate, from his early moot court experiences at Harvard Law School, to his clerkship at the U.S. Supreme Court, his tenure at the U.S. Solicitor General’s Office and his private practice. In a light-hearted discussion, Kannon and host Brian Roberts, chief legal officer of litigation support services provider Array, also discuss Kansas sports, including reminiscing about their high school days in Lawrence, Kansas.
Kannon observes that, while mastering the relevant facts and law is certainly crucial in any given case, final preparation for Supreme Court oral argument “is a lot less about memorizing every last fact about the case and a lot more about thinking about what the key issues are that are really going to matter to the justices as they are deciding how to vote, and coming up with the very best answers to the hardest questions in the case.”
Kannon also previews the upcoming Court Briefs podcast series that he and other members of Paul, Weiss’s Supreme Court and Appellate Group will host. The series will focus on the business cases before the Supreme Court in order to “allow our clients who are mostly in the business community to get smart about the latest Supreme Court decisions that matter to them.”
